Why It Matters

One Michelin Key (2025). Named one of the world's most exciting hotel openings by Condé Nast Traveller. The first time the iconic 97-year-old Gleneagles brand has ever expanded beyond Perthshire. The Spence restaurant — the old grand banking hall — is open to the public and has become a genuine Edinburgh dining destination in its own right. The rooftop bar Lamplighters is strictly members and hotel guests only, which is a real perk.

Gleneagles Townhouse is the famous Perthshire country estate's first and only city outpost — a 33-room luxury hotel, all-day restaurant, rooftop bar, and private members' club occupying a painstakingly restored Georgian sandstone mansion at 39 St Andrew Square. The building started life in 1781 as the home of the 8th Earl of Dalhousie before serving as a Bank of Scotland branch for over 200 years. Ennismore gutted and restored it with serious ambition: original gilded staircases, ornate six-metre ceilings and Corinthian-columned façade all intact, while the old bank vaults now house a cryotherapy chamber and infrared sauna.

House Room

The mid-range category at Gleneagles Townhouse, these rooms strike a balance between the snug Nook and the statement Master. King-sized beds, wooden floors, and characterful details make them feel genuinely homey. Views vary depending on the specific room; some don't have baths. These are the benchmark rooms used for the 'Twice as Nice' package pricing.

Master Room

The largest rooms and the ones worth splashing out for. Master Rooms face St Andrew Square — those soaring ceilings, free-standing baths, marble basins with gold taps, and velvet armchairs make them feel genuinely grand without being stuffy. These are the rooms reviewers rave about. Some include the free-standing bath which, combined with the square view, is hard to beat in Edinburgh.

Nook Room

The entry-level category but no afterthought. Nook Rooms sit on the top floor — cosy, attic-style spaces packed with individually curated book collections, wooden floors and antique rugs. They're rear-facing with no views, and some don't have baths (shower only). If you're not fussed about the square view and want character over grandeur, these work well.
