Glenlo Abbey Hotel
Grand Irish country house with genuine historical bones. Old-world formal in the main house, with a relaxed pub atmosphere in Palmers, and the theatrical drama of the Pullman carriages for dinner. Not stuffy — but definitely estate-paced.
Book the Pullman well ahead — it's open only Wednesday to Sunday and fills up fast on weekends
Why It Matters
The Pullman Restaurant is the standout reason to come: two original Orient Express carriages (one, 'Leona', from 1927, actually appeared in the 1974 film 'Murder on the Orient Express') now holding a Michelin Star under Head Chef Angelo Vagiotis, a Noma and Manresa alum. The 9-hole championship golf course designed by Christy O'Connor Jr. runs right along Lough Corrib. Falconry, a private cinema, and guided fishing with a ghillie who has 40 years of local knowledge round out a genuinely unusual activity menu.
A five-star Irish country estate dating to 1740, set on 138 acres on the shores of Lough Corrib — Ireland's largest lake — just 5km from Galway city centre. The original manor house and stone abbey anchor the property, while two authentically restored Orient Express carriages sit on the grounds serving Michelin-starred tasting menus. It is one of those places where every element of the pitch actually delivers.
