GoldenEye
Barefoot luxury meets Caribbean bohemia. No main building, no lobby, no crowds. Private residences scattered through jungle gardens, designed by Jamaican architect Ann Hodges. Colonial-era louvered windows, clawfoot tubs in outdoor gardens, hardwood floors. The sort of place where Sting wrote 'Every Breath You Take' and Bono wrote the GoldenEye film theme. Still deeply casual and entirely Jamaican.
Kayak or paddleboard directly to the spa from a lagoon villa — staff encourage it and it beats walking
Why It Matters
Ian Fleming built GoldenEye in 1946 and wrote Casino Royale here on February 17, 1952. Every subsequent Bond novel followed at this same desk. The property has been a creative magnet for decades — past guests include Noël Coward, Truman Capote, Princess Margaret, and Errol Flynn. The Fleming Villa itself still sits on the property as a bookable ultra-private retreat. Caribbean Journal ranked it among the 10 best hotels in Jamaica in 2024; Condé Nast Traveler has it on their Gold List.
GoldenEye is Ian Fleming's former estate on the north coast of Jamaica — the exact spot where he sat down every winter and wrote all fourteen James Bond novels. Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, bought it in the 1970s and has been building on it ever since. Today it's a 52-acre compound of stand-alone beach villas, lagoon cottages, and beach huts strung between two private beaches and a four-acre seawater lagoon. The vibe is barefoot and bohemian, with batik robes, Blackwell Rum in the minibar, and a spa that you can kayak to.
