Grad Otočec
Medieval castle romance meets understated luxury. Stone walls, antiques, and a fireplace bar create genuine old-world atmosphere, though rooms lean contemporary rather than overtly historic. Quiet and exclusive — this is a place for slow mornings and long dinners, not buzzing pool scenes.
Book the wine tower tasting in advance (minimum 48 hours, minimum 2 persons) — it's the standout experience on site
Why It Matters
The only castle hotel in Slovenia built on a river island. Member of Relais & Châteaux since 2010. Recipient of 1 Michelin Key (2025) — one of only five Slovenian hotels to earn the distinction. The restaurant is separately listed and recommended in the Michelin Guide. First mentioned in historical records in 1252.
Slovenia's only 'water castle', Grad Otočec sits on a small island in the middle of the Krka River, accessed by two wooden bridges. The 13th-century fortress was restored to its original Gothic and Renaissance form and now operates as a 16-room five-star hotel under the Relais & Châteaux banner. It holds a Michelin Key (2025) and its restaurant is recommended in the Michelin Guide — a rare double distinction for a property this intimate.
