Why It Matters

One of the few city-center Kyoto hotels with a genuine large public bath (Komorebi) overlooking a garden courtyard. Six room types each individually designed in collaboration with traditional craft artisans. Sitting two minutes from Gion-Shijo Station and within walking distance of Yasaka Shrine and Nishiki Market, the location is hard to beat.

Granbell Hotel Kyoto is a designer hotel in the Gion district, opened in July 2017. The exterior is modeled on a machiya townhouse, but step inside and things get more interesting — the public spaces drop into a semi-basement courtyard, where a theatrical combination of modern design and traditional Kyoto craft sensibility plays out. Six room types designed by top craftspeople, a large public bath (rare for a city-center Kyoto hotel) looking out to a garden courtyard, and a golden bar with a 100-year-old transom make this a serious alternative to the standard hotel experience in the area.

Premier King

The hotel's top Western-style room. A 195cm-wide bed sits by the window — broad enough that two people won't notice each other. Out front, a comfortable sofa and table. The frosted glass shower room glows like a lantern at night. Compact footprint for a 'king' room, but beautifully finished.
