Grand Forest Metsovo
Rugged mountain luxury. Stone facades, grey slate roofs, beamed ceilings, handwoven Greek rugs, and exposed stonework inside. It looks like a chalet but operates like a proper 5-star resort. Local and organic obsessed — 92% of food is sourced from nearby suppliers. Furniture is handmade by local craftsmen. Glass bottles only in the minibar.
Ask staff to walk you to your room the first time — the multi-building layout with exterior corridors and multiple elevators is confusing at first
Why It Matters
Won 'World's Leading Landmark Hotel' at the 2021 World Travel Awards. Member of Leading Hotels of the World. The only serious luxury option for miles around in one of Greece's most undervisited and genuinely wild mountain regions. The combination of a well-run spa, strong kitchen, and serious outdoor programming makes it far more than just a scenic sleepover.
Grand Forest Metsovo is a family-owned 5-star mountain hotel with 62 suites perched on a private mountaintop at the fringe of a black pine forest in Epirus, northwest Greece. Eight low-rise chalet-style buildings spread across two square kilometers of private land, each room facing the Pindus peaks. The restaurant, spa, gym, and corridors all face the mountains — the views are inescapable, which is entirely the point.

Picnic in the forest or mountains prepared by the hotel's head chef. Not exactly roughing it.
Winter-only. Cross-country skiing excursions through snow-covered pine forest, led by winter olympians Viola Bauer and Lefteris Fafalis. Anilio Ski Resort (downhill) is 13km away.

Guided electric mountain bike tour through towering black pines to a secluded mountain pond. Easier on the legs than it sounds.
Guided rides into the black pine forest on the hotel's own horses. The property has an on-site horse farm. Can be booked through the concierge.
4x4 excursion into Pindus National Park. Brown bears, grey wolves, wild cats, and rare raptors including the eastern imperial eagle and lanner falcon have all been spotted here.
Marked trails departing directly from the hotel's reception across the 2 sq km private grounds. Access to historic churches and atmospheric caves nearby.
Guided hiking on the hotel's private trails and into the surrounding Pindus National Park — one of Europe's least explored areas. The Ursa Trail holds 'Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe' accreditation.
