Grand Hotel Savoia & Spa
Alpine grandeur meets contemporary luxury — wood-lined rooms, mountain views, a strong après-ski social scene, and a guest list that reads like a 20th-century history book
The 1224 Bar is a genuine social hangout for Cortina locals — it's not just a hotel bar. Head bartender Mauro even wrote a book about his globe-trotting life, and will mix cocktails tableside from a trolley.
Why It Matters
One of the oldest continuously operating grand hotels in the Dolomites (est. 1912), with a genuine celebrity guest list spanning Tolstoy to Charlton Heston to Sophia Loren. Now part of Radisson Collection, it hosted guests during the 2021 Alpine World Ski Championships. The Savoia SPA's head therapist won the inaugural Global Therapist of the Year at the Hall of Wellness Awards.
Built in 1912, the Grand Hotel Savoia is Cortina d'Ampezzo's original grande dame — the sort of place where Churchill and FDR once signed the guest book, and Sophia Loren famously attended the 1956 Winter Olympics just outside. But this isn't a dusty museum piece. A major 2009 renovation, followed by further refurbishment under the Radisson Collection flag, turned it into a genuinely contemporary luxury hotel. The 132 rooms lean into the Alpine chalet aesthetic: warm wood panelling, earthy tones, modern bathrooms. Right on Via Roma, Cortina's main pedestrian street, it's the most central address in town.
