Grand Hotel Vesuvio
Belle Époque grandeur with genuinely old-world interiors — chandeliers, antiques, marble bathrooms, Italian brocades and original paintings. Feels like a stately Italian palazzo, not a boutique lifestyle hotel. The decor is unabashedly formal, which some guests find dated and others find absolutely correct for a property of this history.
Request a sea-facing room with a balcony — the difference between a view of Castel dell'Ovo and a view of the city backstreet is enormous
Why It Matters
The only 5-Star Deluxe hotel on the Naples waterfront and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. The Caruso Roof Garden restaurant is a Michelin-selected restaurant (2026). The hotel hosted the G7 Summit delegations in 1993-94 and has a guest list that reads like a 20th-century who's who: Caruso, Picasso, Grace Kelly, Bill Clinton, Woody Allen, Bruce Springsteen, Julia Roberts, and many more.
The Vesuvio opened in 1882 and immediately became Naples' most famous address. Enrico Caruso spent his last night here in 1921; Oscar Wilde, Guy de Maupassant, Grace Kelly, and Rita Hayworth all stayed. The hotel was nearly destroyed in WWII bombing and painstakingly rebuilt, reopening in 1950 — two extra floors and all. Today it is the only 5-Star Deluxe hotel on the Naples seafront, sitting directly opposite Castel dell'Ovo with views across to Sorrento, Capri, and Mount Vesuvius itself.
