Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola
Classic grand hotel with a Mediterranean edge. Think ornate wallpapers, parquet floors, gilded furniture, and rooms that all feel individual. Not minimalist, not trendy — deliberately classic, with a private-home warmth that large luxury hotels often lose.

Why It Matters
One of the very few Swiss grand hotels with a Michelin-starred restaurant on the lake itself, an art gallery integrated into the dining experience, and a subtropical private park. Member of both Small Luxury Hotels of the World and Tablet Hotels. Holds 16 Gault Millau points at Arté al Lago and 15 at Le Relais. The hotel has hosted aristocrats, politicians, and writers since the Belle Époque era.
A 19th-century Italian-style villa sitting inside its own subtropical park on the edge of Lake Lugano. Built in 1880 as a private residence for the Von Ritter noble Russian family, it became a hotel in 1885 and has never really stopped being grand. Art is everywhere — 17th-century Gobelin tapestries, Italian masters, Flemish paintings, and rotating contemporary sculpture — making it feel more like staying in a curated museum than a standard luxury hotel. The Michelin-starred Arté al Lago restaurant sits right on the water's edge, and there's a private Lido Club across the lakeside promenade.
