Why It Matters
A 1909 Art Nouveau hotel that has been completely reimagined with eclectic design — Mexican Talavera sinks, Chesterfield suites with working fireplaces, a lobby installation by Austrian artist Clemens Hollerer, and a dedicated Banksy Room. The Grand Hôtel Wiesler has been on the Mur riverbank since 1909, but it wears its age lightly. Inside, it's Art Nouveau bones dressed in very contemporary clothes — hand-painted Talavera sinks from Mexico, open showers built right into rooms, guitars and typewriters as décor, a lobby turned into an art gallery. Salon Marie, the in-house restaurant and bar, runs from morning coffee to late-night cocktails, and the Oasis wellness area does sauna and an Arabian tea room instead of the usual bland spa. The hotel deliberately dropped its 5-star rating years ago, and it's a better place for it.
