Gregans Castle Hotel
Eco-conscious Irish country house. Antique furniture sourced on the owners' travels, original artworks, natural fabrics, fresh flowers, and green hues throughout. Warm and personal, not fussy or stuffy. The sort of place where the drawing room fire is always lit and the resident cat may be occupying your preferred armchair.

Why It Matters
One of only 14 hotels in Ireland to hold a Michelin Key (2025). A founding member of the Burren Ecotourism Network and part of the UNESCO Global Geopark. Runs entirely on wind-generated and solar electricity; spring water comes from its own mountain source. J.R.R. Tolkien was a regular guest — the Burren's rock formations and cave systems are said to have inspired Middle Earth. Seamus Heaney and Sean Scully were also guests.
Not a castle — never was. Gregans is an 18th-century manor house (built circa 1750) that has been welcoming guests since the 1940s and is run by owners Simon Haden and Frederieke McMurray since 1976. Set at the foot of Corkscrew Hill on the Wild Atlantic Way, it looks out across the lunar limestone landscape of the Burren and on to Galway Bay. No televisions in the rooms, open fires in every lounge, modern Irish fine dining with produce from the kitchen garden — it's the kind of place that rewards switching off completely.
