Guest House Raleigh
Design-forward historic inn. Clean white lines and lots of natural light throughout. Common spaces include the original parlour and study in the Victorian house, plus a modern open kitchen and dining nook in the addition. Quiet courtyard with a 125-year-old pecan tree. Calm and residential, not hotel-corporate.
Room 4 is ground-floor with its own private patio — ideal if you have heavy luggage (there are exterior stairs to the main entrance).
Why It Matters
One of Raleigh's only true design-forward boutique inns, listed on both Tablet Hotels and Michelin Guide. The building's backstory is genuinely remarkable — physically relocated through downtown to save it from demolition. Bon Appétit called it "the boutique hotel I wish I actually lived in."
A 19th-century Folk Victorian house that was literally picked up and moved six blocks through downtown Raleigh rather than demolished — then transformed into an intimate, adults-only, 8-room boutique inn. The original structure dates to the 1880s and belonged to Arthur and Annie Gorham; Arthur was Raleigh's first African American mail carrier. The design is calm, light-flooded, and minimal, balancing the historic shell of the old house against a 2,775-square-foot modern addition designed by architect Nicole Alvarez. It punches well above its weight for a property this small.
