Retreat Villa 1/f
Deep-forest solitude with Japanese craftsmanship. Think crackling wood stoves, private onsen under the stars, bamboo forest views, and zero reason to leave your villa for hours. Not a spa hotel in the conventional sense — the forest itself is the amenity.
Suite 10 is the showpiece — 150m², highest open-air bath on the property, two separate bedrooms, mini kitchen, and sweeping views of Owakudani. Best villa for groups of 3-4.
Why It Matters
Every one of the 18 villas has a private hot spring bath — no shared onsen required. The property sits on the grounds of a 110-year-old sukiya-style ryokan where the Emperor stayed three times. Seven new villas were added in August 2024. Guests with tattoos (typically banned from public onsen) can soak freely in their private bath.
Hakone Retreat Villa 1/f is 18 fully private log cabin villas spread across a 50,000-square-meter forest in Sengokuhara — one of Hakone's highest and quietest plateaus at about 660 meters elevation. Every villa stands completely independent, comes with a wood-burning stove, kitchenette, and its own private hot spring bath. The site has roots going back to 1914, when the Hyoseki-kaku inn first opened and drew writers, artists, and the Imperial family. Adults only.

A curated library designed by BACH (led by book director Masataka Haba) with custom bookshelves and bookends made to fit the space. A thoughtfully assembled collection to settle into on slow mornings or late evenings.
An in-villa experience where seasonal aroma oils, fruits, cheeses, and chocolates are delivered to your private onsen bath. Seasonal themes (yuzu in winter, etc.). Request available year-round — one of the more memorable stay rituals here.
Explore Sengokuhara's susuki grass plains, Mt. Kintoki approaches, and local art museums on an electrically assisted bicycle. A Sengokuhara area map is provided. From ¥800/hour.
At dusk, relax on hammocks on the rooftop of the könoha spa building, listening to cicadas and the evening forest breeze. A simple, memorable summer-season experience that pairs well with the private onsen after.
Rent a private room inside the century-old Hyoseki-kaku for quiet solo work time. The highland air, silence, and greenery outside the window make it surprisingly effective. ¥1,100/hour, guests only, available 11:00am–4:00pm.
Self-guided yoga in the historic Hyoseki-kaku sukiya-style Japanese house. Yoga mats are provided — lay one down wherever the space feels right and breathe in the wood-scented air. Available morning and evening year-round.
Make your own monaka (a traditional Japanese confection) in the historic Hyoseki-kaku Japanese house. Combine wafers with various bean pastes and seasonal fruits — good for overseas visitors wanting a hands-on taste of Japanese craft culture.
Unique musical instruments including the kalimba (thumb piano) are available at the Free Bird & Terrace outdoor lounge. The sounds echo through the forest. Open to all guests and naturally facilitates interactions between couples, families, and solo travelers.
Chef-prepared picnic lunch boxes taken out to natural locations around Sengokuhara — Mt. Kintoki and Senjo Falls. Forest shade, highland breezes, and proper food. Year-round but particularly good in spring and summer.
Every one of the 18 villas has its own private hot spring bath. No shared facilities, no time limits, no tattoo restrictions. Options range from indoor hinoki cypress baths to open-air rotenburo facing forest, ponds, or mountain panoramas. The ultimate tattooed traveler workaround.
