Why It Matters
Opening in 2024, it's one of the most ambitious new luxury openings in northeastern Italy. The astronomical clock alone justifies the detour. Add a 1,000 m² spa with adults-only access, alpaca trekking on-site, and a gourmet restaurant run by Chef Raffaello Mazzolini with 250+ wine labels — all in a remote village most Italians have never visited.
A 15th-century hydraulic hammer barn — 'Hammerack' literally means 'hammer barn' in the local dialect — converted into a 5-star boutique hotel that opened in 2024. The building sits at 750 meters above sea level, right at the triple border of Italy, Austria, and Slovenia, and the owner Alessandro Pedone has filled it with serious art: two Giorgio de Chirico canvases in the restaurant, Andy Warhol in the bistro, Mario Schifano and Davide Orler paintings in the rooms. The centerpiece is a three-story tower housing a monumental astronomical clock hand-built by Alberto Gorla — the craftsman who restored the Moorish Clock in Venice's St. Mark's Square. Twenty-one rooms, a 1,000 m² spa, two dining venues, and three resident alpacas in the garden.

A guided 45-minute walk along the Animalborghetto trail (1 km, 40 m elevation gain) with the hotel's three resident alpacas — Gaspare, Melchior, and Balthasar. Starts with a 10-minute safety briefing at the Alpaca House opposite the hotel. Interactive stops to pet, feed, and photograph the animals. Total duration about 1 hour.
Bike rental available. The Alpe Adria cycle path to the Fusine Lakes is a scenic flat-to-moderate ride. More challenging circuits include climbs to Lussari and Val Rauna. Circular tours available for all levels.
Whitewater rafting on the rivers in the surrounding valley, arranged through the hotel.
