Why It Matters
California's only two-Michelin-starred restaurant in a remote inn setting. Also holds the Michelin Green Star for sustainability. Chef Kammerer makes his own salt from Pacific seawater and forages lace lichen from nearby trees. The inn was a 2025 James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality.
Harbor House Inn is a 11-room historic inn perched on the cliffs above the Pacific in tiny Elk, California — about 30 minutes south of Mendocino and three hours north of San Francisco. Built in 1916 for the Goodyear Lumber Company and restored in 2018, it's home to one of California's most acclaimed restaurants: a two-Michelin-starred, Michelin Green Star tasting room helmed by Chef Matthew Kammerer, whose hyper-local, coastal-foraged menu has earned James Beard nominations and national press. Come here to fully unplug — cell service disappears on the drive in, and the 20-seat dining room fills fast.

Multiple trails within short driving distance: Greenwood State Beach, Navarro River Redwoods State Park, Van Damme State Park, and the Mendocino Headlands. The concierge provides a printed guide of their favorite spots at check-in.

Guided kayak tours exploring the coastal waterways, sea caves, and marine life along the Mendocino coastline. Arranged through Kayak Mendocino (Craig, 707-813-7117).
Walk the landscaped oceanfront gardens above the cove — lavender, vegetable beds, and the inn's chicken coop. The same gardens that supply ingredients to the kitchen. A good spot for morning coffee or an evening glass of wine.
Follow the garden pathways down to the property's own secluded beach below the cliffs for shell collecting and unobstructed views of Wharf Rock. Exclusive to inn guests. Waves can be strong — more for strolling and tidal exploration than swimming.
The remote location and minimal light pollution make for exceptional stargazing. Binoculars are provided in every room. Guests report clear Milky Way views on cloudless nights.
Grey whales migrate along the Mendocino Coast December through April, visible from the inn's cliffs or via charter boat. Inn recommends Telstar Charters (707-964-8770) or All Aboard Adventures (707-964-1887).
The inn's cellar holds 1,700 individual selections and 7,000 bottles, available to enjoy on-site. The Anderson Valley — just east — is home to 40 wineries and is a popular half-day excursion.
