Classic rural elegance with genuine warmth. The interiors lean into warm yellows, deep greens and reds — cozy and personal rather than grand or intimidating. Castle ruins literally loom overhead. Horses graze outside. The on-site distillery has been making grain spirits since 1700.

Why It Matters
One of Germany's most atmospheric castle hotels — a Relais & Châteaux member since 1999 with a genuine working estate attached. Restaurant Novalis earned 85 Falstaff points in 2025 and ranks among Germany's 500 best gourmet restaurants. Two 18-hole championship golf courses sit minutes from the door. The adjacent Hardenberg Distillery adds a genuinely rare dimension: guests can taste whiskey, gin and liqueurs made on the same estate where they're sleeping.
Situated at the foot of the 1,000-year-old Hardenberg castle ruins in the Leine Valley, this 4-star superior Relais & Châteaux property occupies a beautifully restored 18th-century half-timbered ensemble just 10 km from Göttingen. The Rosentreter family has run it since joining Relais & Châteaux in 1999 — and the place genuinely feels like staying with gracious country gentry rather than checking into a hotel. Think oiled oak floors sourced from the estate's own forest, individually furnished rooms, and a gourmet restaurant that pulls ingredients from the count's own hunt and neighboring organic farms.

The Hardenberg estate has produced grain spirits since 1700. Tours of the copper pot stills, tastings of gin, whiskey and liqueurs. The hotel's own cocktail and digestif menu pulls directly from the distillery. A package combining an overnight stay and distillery experience is bookable.
Curated wine weekend packages combining tastings with multi-course dinners at Restaurant Novalis.
Two 18-hole championship courses just a few minutes' drive from the hotel, run by the Hardenberg GolfResort. The Keilerkopf course is the star, featuring a famous par-3 island green. Driving range, golf lessons and a golf clubhouse on site.
The Count's riding facility sits on the estate. Guests can bring their own horse (stabled at €50 first night, €30 subsequent nights). Horse riding is available in the estate grounds.
Trails through the estate's historic castle park and into the surrounding Leine Valley countryside. Three curated routes from easy (4 km castle ruins loop) to moderate (9 km) to challenging (18 km Plesse Castle loop). The hotel is also a gateway to the Harz Mountains on day trips.
