Hattvika Lodge
Outdoor-rooted Arctic boutique lodge. Authentic fishing village atmosphere, Scandinavian minimalism, and genuine family hospitality. More working harbourside village than manicured resort — fishing boats go out in the morning and come back in the afternoon, right outside your window.
Hillside cabin guests get breakfast included at FANGST; rorbu guests do not — it's an add-on worth booking
Why It Matters
Six-generation family ownership in one of Lofoten's most active fishing villages, the only place in the world with a cod liver oil tasting booth, a fine-dining restaurant (FANGST) sourcing everything within the archipelago, and a program of guided activities — ski touring, sea kayaking, northern lights safaris — run directly with local operators. Listed in the Michelin Guide and a Tablet Hotels property.
Hattvika Lodge sits in Ballstad, a fully operational fishing village midway through the Lofoten archipelago, where 1880s fishermen's cottages (rorbu) have been restored into modern accommodation without losing any of their character. The property is family-owned, with current co-owner Guri Jentoft Bøe representing six generations of the Jentoft family who have shaped this village since 1862. Ten freestanding Hillside cabins were added in 2020, perched above the waterfront on steel supports, and the fine-dining restaurant FANGST opened in 2023, cementing Hattvika's status as far more than a pretty place to sleep.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Unique to Hattvika Lodge — the only cod liver oil tasting booth in the world. Möller's Tran, Norway's most famous cod liver oil brand dating to 1852, has its first processing stage in Ballstad. Guests can taste it at the on-site Taste Depot or sample it at breakfast. An oddly compelling piece of Arctic culinary history.
Excursions out of Ballstad with local fishermen, learning about the Lofoten fishery and its 1,000-year heritage. Runs during the main fishery season (January–April) when the village is at its liveliest.
All levels catered for, from short walks to full-day mountain ascents. Owner-recommended spots include Nonstinden and Ballstadheia — both accessible in 30 minutes of hiking for dramatic views. Guides are local and take guests off the tourist track, adding history and context along the way.
Guided sea kayak tours around Ballstad's harbour and the surrounding islets and small islands, with local guides who know the coastline by heart. A brilliant way to gain perspective on the fishermen's village from the water. Available in summer primarily but arrangeable year-round.
Diving excursions arranged through local partner operators. The Vestfjorden waters offer rich marine life.
Stand-up paddleboarding available from the Hattvika jetty, with views of the fishing village and surrounding peaks.
Surfing arranged through partner operators at Unstad Beach, about 30 minutes' drive from Ballstad — one of the world's northernmost surf breaks.
Year-round photo tours with guides who know the best vantage points. During summer, the midnight sun makes for surreal all-night shooting sessions. Popular with professional and amateur photographers alike — Hattvika actively collaborates with landscape photographers.
Mountain biking in the Lofoten terrain, arranged through local operators in collaboration with the lodge.
Guided evening excursions to find the best aurora viewing spots. The owner himself has been known to take guests to the jetty when conditions look promising. Best from October through March.
High-speed RIB boat tours along the Lofoten coastline, arranged with local operators.
Winter ski touring in the Lofoten mountains, run with local certified guides. The Lofoten ski season coincides with the cod fishery (January–March), making this Hattvika's peak season for the full multi-sensory package. Skottinden Mountain is nearby.
