Hawar Resort
Eco-luxury island resort with a conservation-first ethos and a surprisingly broad activity programme — part Maldives, part desert safari, part Bear Grylls challenge.
Kayaks, bicycles, and paddle boats are complimentary — ask at the water activity centre
Why It Matters
The only luxury resort on Hawar Island, a protected nature reserve 20km off Bahrain's mainland. It operates without single-use plastics, runs an on-site water bottling plant, and is building a solar farm to go fully off-grid. Opened late December 2024 and inaugurated by HRH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Bahrain's first and only luxury resort sits on a UNESCO-recognised island you can only reach by boat. The 30-minute crossing from Durrat Al Bahrain Pavilion is half the point — it leaves the mainland firmly behind. On arrival, you get 104 rooms, villas, and overwater villas spread across 1.8 km of beach, surrounded by a protected wildlife sanctuary that is home to sand gazelles, Arabian oryx, dugongs, and nesting Socotra cormorants. The architecture draws on traditional Bahraini limestone and lime-render, with tent-like roof structures that cast shade and nod to the island's nomadic past.
