Henry Howard Hotel
Historic Southern charm meets New York-polished boutique sensibility. Think antique armoires, custom iron beds, musical instruments mounted on walls, and Haint blue porch ceilings. Feels more like a well-heeled friend's townhouse than a hotel.
Book the King Balcony room if you're visiting during Mardi Gras — the walk-out balcony sits directly on the St. Charles parade route
Why It Matters
One of the few genuine adaptive-reuse boutique hotels in New Orleans that sits outside the French Quarter circus. Named a Top New Hotel in North America by Tablet Hotels in 2018 and has appeared in the New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, Vogue, GQ, and AFAR. The building itself was designed by the 19th-century architect Henry Howard, a prolific figure in New Orleans architectural history.
Built in 1867 by the architect whose name it now carries, the Henry Howard Hotel is an 18-room boutique tucked into the Lower Garden District's Prytania Street. The Greek Revival double-gallery townhouse got a full overhaul at the hands of a pair of New York hotel developers, pairing original crown molding, red-pine floors, and 12-foot ceilings with custom beds, vintage furniture, and local art. No pool, no spa, no restaurant — but The Parlor, which doubles as a lobby bar, makes a strong case for staying in.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The front desk staff doubles as bartenders in The Parlor each evening, mixing handcrafted New Orleans classics. The Sazerac has drawn specific praise from multiple guests. Wine and beer also available.
The hotel sells its own curated self-guided walking tour of the Garden District for $18, giving guests a structured way to explore the neighborhood's historic mansions and streetscapes on their own schedule.
The balcony patio sits half a block from St. Charles Avenue, the main parade route. During Mardi Gras season, it's one of the more coveted spots in the city for watching parades roll by without the French Quarter crowds.
