HIGHFIELD
Antique flamboyance meets contemporary British creativity. Each room is more like a themed world than a hotel suite — no two are remotely the same. The public spaces run to chandelier-lit cocktail bars and ornate fireplaces. It is genuinely eccentric, confidently so, and pulls it off.
Book the restaurant (The Mill & Vine) separately — it is independently run and has its own reservation system; do not assume hotel check-in staff can sort this for you
Why It Matters
Michelin Hotel Guide listed, AA 5-Star Guest Accommodation with 2 AA Rosettes. One of East Yorkshire's most creatively designed properties, with individually themed suites on a historic Grade II listed estate. The only hotel of this calibre in the Yorkshire Wolds.
Built in 1864 as a Victorian merchant's gift to his wife, Highfield is a Grade II listed faux-Tudor country house that sat quietly as a private home and country club for over a century before husband-and-wife designer duo Andy and Lindsey Lampard restored it and reopened it as a boutique hotel in 2022. The exterior — all black-and-white timbering and wisteria — looks the part. Inside is something else: twelve individually designed suites, each with its own full character and obsessive detail, from Batman wallpaper to a working train set. Seven acres of private grounds include lawned gardens, woodland, an orchard, and a trout stream.
