Amsterdam
Classic upscale city hotel with a heavy dose of 1960s cultural heritage. Corporate-friendly with excellent meeting facilities, but the canal-side setting and John & Yoko legacy give it genuine character that generic business hotels lack.
Request a canal-view room — the panoramic windows looking out over the Noorder Amstelkanaal are genuinely special
Why It Matters
The hotel is literally name-checked in a Beatles song. John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1969 'Bed-In for Peace' took place in the presidential suite — now redesigned as the John and Yoko Suite and bookable by guests. It was also the first internationally affiliated hotel to open in the Netherlands.
The Hilton Amsterdam opened in 1962 as the first internationally-affiliated hotel in the Netherlands and earned its permanent place in pop culture when John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged their famous 'Bed-In for Peace' in Suite 702 in March 1969. Sitting on the Noorder Amstelkanaal in the upscale Amsterdam Oud-Zuid district, the V-shaped building — designed by architect Hugh Aart Maaskant — overlooks a private marina and feels far removed from the tourist chaos of the Jordaan. It's a solid upper-upscale Hilton with serious meeting infrastructure, Italian fine dining, a Ralph Lauren-designed bar, and the kind of canal-side garden terrace that makes you want to stay put.
