Why It Matters

The resort operates as a literal fourth village on Taketomi Island, adhering to the island government's architectural preservation guidelines — the same ones residents follow. Every building is a single-story wooden villa with Ryukyu red-tile roof and shisa figurines, indistinguishable from the neighboring heritage district. The dining concept — called 'Island Terroir' — treats Yaeyama Island ingredients the way a French sommelier treats wine, elevating hyper-local produce through French technique.

Hoshinoya Taketomi Island is the HOSHINOYA brand's take on a tropical Okinawan island resort — 48 stand-alone villas built to the island's strict heritage architecture code, so the whole place reads as the fourth village on a 350-person island. Red-tiled roofs, shisa lion statues on every roof, coral-white sand paths, and Ryukyu limestone gukku walls throughout. The French-inflected dining here draws on Yaeyama Island terroir — think kuruma prawns raised on Taketomi, tropical vegetables, and local 'life grass' — and the 46m oval pool is open 24 hours.

Where You'll Stay

4 room types available

Gajoni (Gajumaru)
Villa

Gajoni (Gajumaru)

From JPY147,000 / night

The signature room. Western-style villa for two with a king-size bed and a living room featuring a floor-level sofa. The defining feature is an immense soaking bathtub positioned in the center of the room — open rather than enclosed, giving it a striking, modern feel. South-facing floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to a private coral-sand garden, letting the paikaji south breeze flow through. Each villa has a unique shisa statue on the roof.

Villa

Kyangi (Inumaki)

From JPY147,000 / night

The Japanese-style villa for two, laid with soft Ryukyu tatami mats. Low zaisu chairs face the private garden and tropical sky. Quieter and more contemplative in atmosphere than the Gajoni. Same exterior — red-tile roof, shisa statue, gukku stone walls — but the interior is distinctly Japanese.
