Hotel 1898
Spanish colonial grandeur — think a wealthy gentleman's club that was converted into a hotel. Exposed brick, sisal floors, lots of rich leather, and tasteful nods to the Philippines throughout. Fashionable crowd, attentive service, and a distinctly Barcelona energy once you step onto the roof.

Why It Matters
The only hotel on La Rambla with both a rooftop pool and an underground thermal spa. The building itself carries Speciality Monument status and was meticulously restored by Núñez i Navarro to preserve its original stone façades, mahogany doors, and marble interiors. The Colonial Suites each come with a private 60 sqm terrace and pool — essentially a penthouse on La Rambla.
Hotel 1898 occupies one of La Rambla's most historically loaded buildings — the former headquarters of the General Philippines Tobacco Company, designed in 1881 by Catalan architect Josep Oriol Mestres for the Marqués de Comillas. The name isn't a street number; it's the year Spain lost its overseas empire, including the Philippines. That colonial history permeates everything: dark mahogany, marble floors, leather furniture, striped walls, and framed maps of the archipelago lining the corridors. It's a proper four-star Superior hotel with 169 rooms, two pools (one rooftop, one subterranean spa), and a genuine sense of place that most La Rambla hotels don't come close to.
