Why It Matters
First five-star boutique hotel in the Netherlands (opened 1997). A certified Rijksmonument inside a UNESCO World Heritage-listed canal district. Gault Millau Hotel of the Year 2017. Only 23 rooms — no two alike — in a four-story canal house with no elevator.
Hotel 717 is the first luxury boutique hotel in the Netherlands — 23 individually decorated rooms in a listed 19th-century canal house on the Prinsengracht, opened in 1997 and counting. The building itself dates back to 1810, when a successful sugar merchant built it to celebrate his fortune, and the back house in the courtyard is even older, from the 17th century. Think Loro Piana beds, Frette sheets, silk and gold thread wallpaper, Chopard toiletries, and 24/7 butler service — all inside a UNESCO heritage site. Small, personal, and genuinely refined.
