Why It Matters
Listed on both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels; the rooftop is one of the most talked-about bar and dining destinations in San Miguel, open to non-guests. The entire building is constructed with chukum — a thermally efficient material from Mexico's southeast — which naturally regulates room temperature. All water is filtered and drinkable straight from the tap, a genuine rarity in Mexican luxury hotels.
Hotel Amatte is a 29-room boutique hotel sitting on a hill with sweeping views over San Miguel de Allende and the Allende dam. Japanese architect Shinji Miyazaki designed the whole property under the Wabi-Sabi philosophy — finding beauty in imperfection — resulting in bone-colored chukum walls, over 5,000 cacti in ancient clay pots, recycled wood accents, and volcanic stone bathrooms. The rooftop alone spans 1,200 square meters of bars and restaurants. It's 10 minutes from the historic centro by taxi, which you will need — the hill is steep.
