Why It Matters

Hotel Amparo opened on January 1, 2019, when husband-and-wife team Taylor Goodall and Mariana Barran de Goodall converted a 300-year-old villa — once the mayor's private residence — into one of San Miguel de Allende's most design-forward boutique hotels. Texas-based designer Aaron Rambo layered mid-century European furniture with local artisan pieces, original artwork, hand-carved four-poster beds, and bold textiles against wood-beamed ceilings and stone fireplaces. The result: five individually designed suites arranged around a sun-drenched courtyard, a rooftop bar (Bar Margaret) pouring creative mezcal cocktails and Peruvian-influenced small plates, and an on-site coffee shop running small-batch Mexican beans through a La Marzocco machine.

Amparo Suite
The largest suite in the hotel. A portrait of former president Porfirio Díaz hangs on the wall — fitting for the grandest room in a former mayoral residence. The bathroom alone, with its soaking tub and separate shower, is larger than many hotel rooms. Beyond that, there's a spacious bedroom with a desk and sitting area featuring several chairs and a divan. Decor is eclectic: antiques mixed with modern art, colorful spreads, and piles of pillows.
King
Cielo Suite
The only room on the hotel's second storey. At 318 sq ft, it has a king bed, a study area, and a private patio with views across the rooftop terrace and out over San Miguel de Allende. Ensuite has a walk-in shower. If you want city views and a sense of elevation above the courtyard, this is the pick.

Fuente Suite
At 425 sq ft, the Fuente is the hotel's most flexible room — it sleeps up to four guests across two bedrooms, each with a king bed and its own ensuite shower bathroom. The two rooms share a patio with a fountain. Decor mixes antique pieces with contemporary art throughout. The only suite that works for two couples or a family.

Jardín Room
A 386 sq ft ground-floor room with a king four-poster bed and access to a shared patio. Ensuite has a shower. It's one of the more atmospheric rooms given the four-poster and its courtyard proximity — you're essentially living around the same garden that makes the whole hotel feel residential.
KingRey Suite
A king suite with ensuite bathroom featuring a shower. Like all rooms, it's stocked with Le Labo products and a Bang & Olufsen Bluetooth radio. One guest described it as 'a masterpiece — the most tasteful and refined suite in all of Mexico.' The decor mixes antiques with contemporary art in a way that somehow hangs together perfectly.
