Hotel Amparo
Colonial-meets-contemporary. Eclectic interiors with antiques, modern art, mahogany furniture, artisan rugs, and bright tiling. Feels like a staffed private villa rather than a hotel.
Book 6+ months ahead — with only 5 rooms, it sells out well in advance for peak season
Why It Matters
Landed on every major 'hot list' within months of opening in 2019. Condé Nast voted it 12th best hotel in Mexico in its first year. It's a Small Luxury Hotels of the World member and curated by Tablet Hotels/MICHELIN Guide. Bathrooms are stocked with Le Labo products and every room has a Bang & Olufsen Bluetooth radio. With only five suites and a maximum of 10 guests, the staff-to-guest ratio feels genuinely residential.
Hotel Amparo opened on January 1, 2019, when husband-and-wife team Taylor Goodall and Mariana Barran de Goodall converted a 300-year-old villa — once the mayor's private residence — into one of San Miguel de Allende's most design-forward boutique hotels. Texas-based designer Aaron Rambo layered mid-century European furniture with local artisan pieces, original artwork, hand-carved four-poster beds, and bold textiles against wood-beamed ceilings and stone fireplaces. The result: five individually designed suites arranged around a sun-drenched courtyard, a rooftop bar (Bar Margaret) pouring creative mezcal cocktails and Peruvian-influenced small plates, and an on-site coffee shop running small-batch Mexican beans through a La Marzocco machine.
