Hotel Cortijo del Marqués
Rural Andalusian manor with genuine historic character — cobbled patios with citrus trees, fountains, terracotta, a chapel dating to 1878. Not a designed aesthetic, but the real thing, lovingly kept. Quiet, slow-paced, oriented around reading, eating well, and wandering olive groves.
Ask Eilko to recommend wines to pair with dinner — his selections are consistently praised
Why It Matters
Listed on Tablet Hotels and featured in Sawday's, Mr & Mrs Smith, and i-escape. One of very few true cortijo-style country house hotels in Granada operating at this level. Rooms are genuinely converted farm structures — grain silo, granary, cisterns — not just rustic-themed interiors. Property dates to 1532 when it was granted to the Marquis of Mondéjar, Captain General of Granada.
A 500-year-old Andalusian manor outside Granada, run by a Dutch-Austrian couple who bought it in 2010 and spent years carefully restoring it. Fifteen individually designed rooms occupy the old granary, grain silo, stables, pigeon loft, and main house — all stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and original fittings. Deliberately no TVs. Meals are exceptional, wine list runs 200+ bottles, and the Alhambra is 30 minutes down the road.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The property's 1878 chapel has been carefully restored to its original condition. Available for visits by guests and — given reviews — also used for weddings.
Hotel is 30km from the Alhambra — roughly 25-30 minutes by car. Owners provide a guest information file in each room covering what to see, and advise strongly to book Alhambra tickets well in advance. Flamenco in the Sacromonte caves and the Albayzín neighbourhood are also recommended.
Hand-drawn walking route maps provided by the owners. Trails through olive groves, almond trees, and open countryside surrounding the cortijo. Wildlife is particularly good — bird life is outstanding.
Arranged through a nearby riding school with well-trained horses. 2-hour guided tours through the surrounding countryside. Minimum 2 riders. Described by guests as having a real wild-west feel given the landscape.
High-quality KTM mountain bikes available for rent. Owner Eilko has mapped out suggested cycling routes through the olive groves and surrounding countryside. Guests choose a route and explore independently.
Seasonal outdoor pool set in a walled courtyard with long views out to the Sierra de Arana. Loungers around the pool. Accessed directly from El Palomar suite — other guests via the courtyard. Not available November–March.
