Hotel de Hallen
Urban-vintage, industrial-chic. High ceilings, original tram rails underfoot, walls full of contemporary art, pops of scarlet and cobalt. It's a creative neighborhood hotel, not a luxury cocoon.

Why It Matters
One of very few hotels genuinely housed inside a functioning cultural complex. The 1901 tram depot architecture is intact — visible rails, steel beams, dramatic atrium — and the building also contains the Foodhallen food market, a cinema, and a library. Endorsed by Lonely Planet, Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, and Wallpaper.
A 1901 tram depot turned four-star boutique hotel, and the original tramlines are still embedded in the floors to prove it. Hotel de Hallen sits inside the De Hallen cultural complex in Amsterdam-West — sharing the building with Foodhallen, an art-house cinema, and a public library. The common spaces are genuinely impressive: soaring industrial ceilings, bold jewel-toned colors, contemporary art handpicked by the owner, and a large sunny terrace on Bellamyplein square. But go in clear-eyed: the rooms are small (mostly 22 sqm) and many face an interior atrium rather than daylight. There is no pool, no spa.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The De Hallen complex that surrounds the hotel includes an art-house cinema. Good for a rainy Amsterdam evening without going far.
The hotel offers bike rentals for guests to cycle around Amsterdam. Flat city terrain makes this the most practical way to reach the Rijksmuseum, Vondelpark, and Jordaan — all within a 5–10 minute ride.
Not technically the hotel's own offering, but Foodhallen is in the same De Hallen complex — literally next door. Over 20 food stalls under one roof covering everything from ramen to oysters. Open daily, no reservations needed. Guests consistently cite it as a major perk of staying here.
The hotel has been an official wedding location since 2014. The industrial architecture — high ceilings, dramatic atrium — makes for a striking setting. Can accommodate up to 100 guests. The Glass Cabin meeting room handles smaller gatherings of up to 20.
