Hotel de Sal Luna Salada
Rustic Andean boutique — earthy, remote, and genuinely unusual. Salt block walls, wood beams, llama-wool textiles, and fireplace lounges. The vibe is adventure-base-camp meets design hotel.

Why It Matters
One of the only hotels in the world constructed almost entirely from salt blocks. The Salar de Uyuni — the world's largest salt flat at 10,582 sq km — is literally at the doorstep. Satellites use it to recalibrate GPS systems. The hotel has been featured in National Geographic and is listed in both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels.
Built almost entirely from salt blocks harvested directly from the flats below, Luna Salada sits on a low hill at the edge of Salar de Uyuni, 11,995 feet above sea level. Rooms are dressed in locally woven Andean textiles and bright accent colors — no televisions, by design. The salt flat starts just meters from the front door, and on calm days after rain the whole horizon becomes a perfect mirror. Featured in National Geographic.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Bicycles available for rent to explore the immediate surroundings of the hotel and the edge of the salt flats.
Several common seating areas throughout the hotel corridors with fireplaces — ideal for reading or evening drinks when temperatures drop.
Indoor games room with billiards/pool table and table tennis (ping pong). A practical option given the cold nights at altitude.
Multi-day excursion to the mineral-rich salt lakes in the surrounding altiplano — Laguna Blanca (white/clear), Laguna Verde (bright green from minerals at the base of Licancabur volcano), and Laguna Colorada (red, with flamingos).
Trip across the flats to the ancient island rising from the salt, covered in giant centuries-old cacti. A surreal landscape — especially during the rainy season when the flats mirror the sky.
A guided 4WD tour across the salt flats visiting the Playa Blanca salt museum, the monument to the Dakar Rally, the island of flags, and culminating with a sunset on the white surface as the sky changes colors. Includes a bottle of wine and snacks during the sunset stop.
Guided night sky tour on the salt flats. Zero light pollution at 3,658m above sea level — one of the best stargazing locations in the world. The flat white surface doubles the visible sky.
Guided trip to the iconic train graveyard 25 km from the hotel, where 19th-century British-built locomotives have been slowly rusting in the salty wind. Typically combined with a stop in Colchani village to see traditional salt processing and the handicraft market.
