Hotel de Toiras
Classic French elegance with serious historical detail. Think antique furniture, Pierre Frey and Canovas fabrics, working fireplaces in the suites, and deep claw-foot tubs. Low-key for a 5-star — no fussy formality, but clearly expensive taste throughout. The vibe attracts urban Parisians who want Atlantic air without the Riviera posturing.

Why It Matters
The first 5-star hotel in the Poitou-Charentes region, a Relais & Châteaux member, Michelin Guide selected (2026), Gault & Millau listed for restaurant George's. The interior design is by Pierre-Yves Rochon (the same designer behind Villa Clarisse next door). Every room is individually decorated around a specific historical character linked to the island's past.
A 17th-century shipowner's mansion right on the harbour of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, the main town on the Île de Ré. Owner Olivia Le Calvez converted it into the first 5-star hotel in the Poitou-Charentes region, and the whole place feels like staying in a well-curated private home rather than a hotel. Every room is named after a historical figure tied to the island — the décor follows through with real commitment, right down to the Nina Campbell birdcage wallpaper in the Evangeline room and the Ralph Lauren fabrics in the Duc de Buckingham suite.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The owner's winery, Château Clarisse, is located in Saint-Émilion Puisseguin. Guided visits with tasting can be arranged through the hotel.
The Île de Ré has 200km of well-marked, entirely flat cycle paths through salt marshes, vineyards, pine forest, and small villages. Hotel guests can rent e-bikes or standard bikes through partner YooToo (10% discount) from the hotel entrance. Cycling to oyster shacks along the route for a midday stop is the island's signature activity.
Accompany Chef Ronan Fillatre to the local morning market to select the day's fresh fish, subject to availability. Exclusively for guests of Hotel de Toiras or Villa Clarisse. Must be reserved in advance.
Informal oyster huts line the island's cycle paths. Stop for fresh oysters with locally produced white wine — the Île de Ré is one of France's better-known oyster-producing areas. A highlight of any cycling day from the hotel.
The 110 sqm George Washington Presidential Suite can be arranged for private dinners of 4–8 guests around the working fireplace. Contact the hotel directly to organise.
The 17th-century fortifications of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, designed by Vauban and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surround the town and are an easy stroll from the hotel after dinner.
