Why It Matters
1 Michelin star (since 2017), 3 Gault-Millau red toques, and listed in GEO Saison's 100 most beautiful hotel-restaurants in Germany. Chef-patron Nicolai Wiedmer is also Vice President of JRE International. The hotel is furnished entirely with Vitra and Polyform pieces — a rarity at this price point.
Das Eckert is a family-run lifestyle and design hotel sitting right on the German-Swiss border, about 5 km from Basel city centre. The Wiedmer family — father Rainer on the hotel side, son Nicolai in the kitchen — have been running it since 2014, and the standard they hold is unusually high for a town this size. Under the same roof: a Michelin-starred restaurant that's been earning its star every year since 2017. The furniture is Vitra and Polyform throughout, rooms have Egyptian cotton sheets and granite bathrooms, and the breakfast is the kind that makes you miss your train on purpose.

Comfort Double
The standard double, with a balcony. Individually decorated with Vitra and Polyform furniture, pillowtop bed with Egyptian cotton sheets, granite bathroom with bathrobes and slippers, minibar, espresso maker. Every room has air conditioning.
Double
Comfort Single
The entry-level room for solo travellers. Same design DNA as the rest of the hotel — Vitra and Polyform furniture, wooden flooring, granite bathroom. Compact but well-finished, with balcony, air conditioning, minibar, espresso maker, and free WiFi.
Family Room (Balcony)
A larger room set up for families, with balcony access. The hotel is notably family-friendly — dogs are welcome (€10/night), children get their own menu in the restaurant, and there's a garden with 16 chickens on-site.
Family Room (Terrace, Garden Access)
The ground-floor family option with direct terrace and garden access — the most practical choice if you're travelling with young children or a dog. Steps directly onto the hotel's garden lawn.
Signature Comfort Double
Located in the newer Signature wing, this double comes with a terrace rather than a balcony. Slightly more contemporary feel than the older Comfort rooms. Same high-quality finishes throughout.
DoubleSignature Single
Single room in the newer Signature wing. Same design approach as Comfort Single but in the more recently built section of the hotel, which tends to be quieter and slightly fresher in feel.
Signature Superior Double
The top double configuration — newer wing, more space, and the most considered design detailing in the hotel. Guests have noted touches like record players in some rooms.
DoubleSuperior Double
A step up in size. Balcony, the same Vitra/Polyform furniture programme, and more generous floor space than the standard Comfort Double. Some bathrooms in this category include free-standing bathtubs.
DoubleSuperior Suite
The largest accommodation in the hotel — one suite total. Balcony, a separate sitting area, and the most space you'll find on-site. Same design vocabulary as the rest of the property but with considerably more room to breathe.
