Hotel El Manantial del Silencio
Spanish Colonial boutique — monastic white walls, dark wood furniture, colonial arches, Egyptian cotton sheets. Deliberately low-tech. Locally sourced materials, antiques and art from historic northern Argentine families. Zero pretension, maximum atmosphere.
Book Calandria restaurant even if you're not staying — it's open to non-guests and worth the trip on its own.
Why It Matters
The only full-service boutique hotel with a serious restaurant and spa directly at the foot of the Cerro de los Siete Colores. Its architect, Mariano Sepúlveda, received a Spanish Royal honour for his colonial-style work in Argentina. Chef Sergio Latorre's Andean gourmet cooking — featuring llama, Yala trout, quinoa and amaranth — has earned the restaurant an international following well beyond the hotel's small guest count.
El Manantial del Silencio — 'Source of Silence' — is a Spanish Colonial-style boutique hotel sitting at the base of the Hill of Seven Colors in the tiny village of Purmamarca, inside the UNESCO-listed Quebrada de Humahuaca. Built in 2000 by award-winning architect Mariano Sepúlveda using adobe walls and hollow cane roofs, the property feels more like a historic manor than a hotel. There are no TVs in the rooms. What you get instead: wrought-iron details, canopied beds, shuttered windows framing red mountains, a heated outdoor pool, a gourmet Andean restaurant (Calandria), resident llamas wandering the gardens, and very good quiet.
