Why It Matters
Each of the 33 rooms is unique, with original contemporary artwork commissioned from South Tyrolean, Italian, Austrian, and German artists — the only condition being that the art had to match the hand-knotted Gabbeh carpet in the room. The hotel has been a member of Design Hotels since its renovation and is also bookable via Marriott Bonvoy. Owner Franz Staffler oversaw every design decision personally.
Hotel Greif is a family-owned boutique hotel sitting directly on Bolzano's Piazza Walther, the main square of a city that can't quite decide if it's Italian or Austrian. The 1993 renovation by Viennese architect Boris Podrecca kept the old bones — the original portal, the Biedermeier antiques — and wrapped them in handwoven Iranian Gabbeh carpets, dark Wengé wood floors, and original art commissioned specifically for each of the 33 rooms. It's a proper art hotel, not just a hotel with art on the walls.

Free bike hire for guests to explore Bolzano and the surrounding cycling paths, including the scenic Eisack river route. Bolzano has excellent dedicated cycling infrastructure.
