Why It Matters
One of Zurich's most historically significant hotel-bars — the 'Helvti' was literally where the 1980 youth protest movement was born. The restaurant holds 14 GaultMillau points. The Miami-style poolbar sits directly on the Sihl river. And the art program is genuinely curatorial, with works from names held by MoMA and Centre Pompidou.
The 'Helvti' has been Zurich's most interesting address since the 1980s, when it served as the unofficial HQ of the city's counter-cultural revolution — the bar where musicians, artists, students and journalists plotted the summer of 'Züri brännt.' Now it's a 36-room boutique hotel in a listed Art Nouveau building on the Sihl river, with a 14-GaultMillau-point restaurant, one of the city's best pool bars, and a rotating program of serious contemporary art. The gap between bohemian and bourgeoisie narrows here considerably.

Two suites on the top floor of the listed building, and the gap in quality versus the standard rooms is significant. At 45m2, there's a proper living area, a reading armchair, a sofa bed, and a kitchenette. The walls are hung with original works by Verena Loewensberg, Erik Steinbrecher, James Turrell and Beat Zoderer. Panoramic views over the Zurich rooftops. The best rooms in the building by some margin.

The smallest category, but not without character. The Art Nouveau architecture does a lot of heavy lifting in 16m2. Views look out over the city or the Sihl. Every room gets the Hästens Maranga bed — that part doesn't change regardless of category.

Current showcase (through June 2026): Pamela Rosenkranz — whose works are held by MoMA New York and Centre Pompidou — with Healer Scrolls kirigami-cut works on view throughout the hotel. The program is connected to the WACollection platform and the sister property Volkshaus Basel.
