Why It Matters
GBE Hotel Design Award winner (2022, Best Designed Hotel of the Year). Interior concept designed by Studio Carter, drawing from the 'Four Arts of the Southern Song Dynasty' (tea, incense, flowers, painting) and the nocturnal energy of Lin'an Imperial City Night. One of the only hotels in China that translates Song Dynasty aesthetics into genuinely contemporary design rather than kitsch pastiche.
A design hotel that takes the Southern Song Dynasty seriously — not as a dusty history lesson, but as genuine creative inspiration. The whole building, completed in 2022, was designed by Studio Carter and won the GBE Hotel Design Award for best designed hotel of the year. Every detail, from the ink-wash corridor murals to the lantern-inspired lighting, references the imperial culture that made 12th-century Hangzhou the most refined city on earth.
