Hotel Jerome
Victorian mountain grandeur meets relaxed mountain-town cool. Ornate stone fireplaces, encaustic tile floors, mounted deer heads, cowhide chairs, and tree-stump lamps. History is everywhere but it never feels like a museum. The vibe is festive — the lobby bar hums most nights of the week.
All dining and bar outlets add a 22% automatic service charge — this applies at J-Bar too, even for just drinks.
Why It Matters
The only Aspen hotel to survive over 130 years of boom-and-bust cycles. Voted #20 Best Hotel in the World by Condé Nast Traveler 2024 Readers' Choice Awards and #1 hotel in Colorado by Travel + Leisure 2024. Holds one Michelin Key. Has the only above-ground ballroom in Aspen. The J-Bar once served as Hunter S. Thompson's de facto office, inspired a Glenn Frey song, and invented the Aspen Crud cocktail during Prohibition.
Hotel Jerome opened in 1889 at the height of Aspen's silver boom and never really closed — it's the only hotel in town to survive the silver crash, the Depression, and the long quiet years before skiing put Aspen back on the map. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it's a three-story Victorian brick landmark on Main Street, and the J-Bar inside is still the town's most storied watering hole. Rooms start at 525 square feet, which is generous by any Aspen standard, and the whole place mixes genuine Old West character with the polish you'd expect from Auberge.
