Gojo Station (Exit 8, Subway Karasuma Line) is a 1-minute walk and far less crowded than Kyoto Station — use it for daily outings.

Why It Matters

One of the few hotels in Kyoto where every single room includes a private hinoki (cypress) wood soaking tub and tatami floor. The name itself signals intent: 'KAN' means experience, 'RA' refers to Raku (Kyoto) — so the whole ethos is about connecting guests to the city's culture through materials, food, and craft. The on-site kintsugi studio RIUM and guided neighbourhood walks by staff give it real substance beyond décor.

Hotel Kanra Kyoto is a modern design hotel that takes the machiya — Kyoto's traditional wooden merchant townhouse — and reinterprets it for contemporary travelers. Natural wood, stone, and iron appear throughout; every room has a cypress-wood bathtub and a tatami living area. It's not a ryokan, but it borrows the best parts of one.

Actus Room (Annex)

A one-of-a-kind duplex designed in collaboration with ACTUS, a respected Japanese contemporary interior brand. The 1st floor has the bedroom with two Hollywood twin beds; the lower floor has a living room and terrace. Deluxe Twin Room (Main Building)

The most popular room category with 20 units across floors 2–4. At 47㎡ it's comfortable for families and groups. Hollywood twin-style beds (two 140cm mattresses on a shared base), plus a tatami floor living space that can accommodate one extra futon. Each room has a separated cypress bathtub and shower.

Double Room (Main Building)

The entry-level room at 30㎡ — compact but not claustrophobic. One 180cm king bed, a cozy tatami living space, and the separated cypress bathtub that's standard across the property. Honest downside: with luggage for two and possibly an extra bed, space gets tight.

Double Room Annex

A 32㎡ annex double with a queen-sized bed (160cm) and a Japanese tatami reading space. Compact but smartly laid out. The cypress bathtub is standalone rather than in a separated room — a modern touch that works well in the smaller footprint.

Kagiroi Room (Annex)
duplex room

Kagiroi Room (Annex)

The most authentically traditional room in the building. Duplex layout: the upper floor is a tatami bedroom with futon sleeping on traditional Japanese furnishings; the lower floor opens onto a small garden with an engawa (traditional Japanese porch). If you want to sleep as close to old Kyoto as a modern hotel allows, this is the room. 60㎡ including terrace.

Maisonette Room (Annex)

Maisonette Room (Annex)

Kanra's own original duplex design — traditional Japanese style on the upper floor (tatami, futons), and a modern sofa living room with terrace below. The cypress bathtub sits in a separated bathroom. If the Kagiroi Room is too purely traditional, the Maisonette balances both sides nicely. 60㎡ including terrace.
