Hotel La voie Lactée
Retro-alpine boutique. Think 1960s–70s ski-chalet modernism: warm wood, soft pastels, vintage finds, and zero of the usual bland mountain-chain styling. Cosy but design-forward.

Why It Matters
The only 4-star boutique hotel in La Mongie — a ski resort that previously had nothing but basic apartment blocks and guesthouses. Directly opposite the Grand Tourmalet ski lifts and a 5-minute walk to the Pic du Midi cable car. Located inside a certified dark sky reserve (French RICE label), so the star-gazing from the terrace is exceptional. Rooms start at a reasonable €140 for a solo traveller.
La Voie Lactée is the only luxury hotel in La Mongie, a ski station sitting at 1,800 metres in the French Pyrenees. Owners Nathalie and Philippe Dours took over a derelict former hotel (La Crête Blanche) in 2022, brought in architect Romain Thévenot, and turned it into a 20-room 4-star with a retro-alpine aesthetic — pastel colours, Douglas pine wall panelling, vintage-foraged furniture, Pyrenex duvets, and local wool throws. It opened for the winter season 2023. Step outside and you are directly across from the ski lifts and the cable car up to the Pic du Midi observatory. The Milky Way restaurant, Nordic hot tubs on the terrace, and an eco-conscious philosophy (recycled materials, local suppliers) round out the offer.

How you'll actually spend your days.
In summer, La Mongie is a hub for cyclists tackling the legendary Tour de France ascents: the Col du Tourmalet and the Col d'Aspin. The routes are well-maintained and the altitude makes them genuinely challenging.
Extensive hiking trail network around La Mongie and the Tourmalet massif, accessed directly from the hotel. Summer brings green pastures (estives) with panoramic Pyrenean views.
Available in winter at the resort. Organised locally — the hotel can advise on booking.
The cable car departure is 300m from the hotel, rising to the Pic du Midi observatory at 2,877m. Day visits offer 300km panoramic views of the Pyrenees in clear weather. Nighttime visits under the dark sky reserve are particularly spectacular for star-gazing.
Step out of the hotel and you are directly at the lifts for Grand Tourmalet, the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees. Over 100 km of slopes spanning La Mongie and Barèges sides. The Pic du Midi descent is ranked among the world's 50 best freeride runs.
Snowshoeing through the snow-covered Pyrenean landscapes is a popular option for guests who want to explore without skiing.
Seasonal evening activities organised in the resort — snowmobile rides and torchlit descents are offered for holidaymakers.
The area holds the French RICE International Dark Sky Reserve label, restricting outdoor lighting to protect night-sky visibility. Guests can star-gaze from the hotel terrace or ride the cable car for a nighttime Pic du Midi experience at 2,877m.
