Hotel Locarno
Art Nouveau / Art Deco bohemian elegance. Think faded Venetian palazzo crossed with a 1960s Roman film set. Liberty-style lamps, coffered ceilings, clawfoot bathtubs, and a bar that still draws Rome's creative crowd.
Room 605 is the room Wes Anderson reputedly used when conceiving The Grand Budapest Hotel — worth asking about availability
Why It Matters
One of Rome's oldest continuously operating boutique hotels, opened 1925. Listed in the Michelin Guide (with a Michelin Key distinction), featured in the World's 50 Best Hotels Discovery, and associated with Federico Fellini, Wes Anderson, Orson Welles, Isabella Rossellini, and Marcello Mastroianni. The bar is separately celebrated by the Financial Times as one of Rome's best cocktail destinations.
Hotel Locarno opened in 1925 and has been collecting stories ever since. Founded by Swiss visionaries, the Art Nouveau property sits just steps from Piazza del Popolo and survived Nazi occupation and Allied requisition before becoming Rome's go-to creative refuge during the Dolce Vita era. Federico Fellini drew inspiration here. Wes Anderson allegedly wrote much of The Grand Budapest Hotel in Room 605. Today, under owner Caterina Valente (daughter of the woman who rescued and restored the hotel in the 1970s), the 49-room property still runs with that same singular, slightly eccentric energy — antique furniture, marble bathrooms, a secret garden bar, and rooftop terraces overlooking the city skyline.
