Hotel Lucine
Texan mid-century time capsule. Think candy-colored roofline canopies in teal, turmeric and terracotta over a bright white courtyard, low-slung mid-century sofas in The Den, and a rooftop bar with 180-degree Gulf views. Around 95% of the furniture was custom-designed for the space.
The 'Lucine King' rooms on the second floor near the rooftop bar are quieter than courtyard-facing balcony rooms but have great Gulf views from the roof — locals who stay repeatedly prefer them
Why It Matters
The oldest surviving midcentury beachfront motel in Galveston, originally built by brothers Saul and Ben Kotin in 1963, with architecture by Tibor Beerman. Hotel Lucine is the first upscale boutique conversion of its kind on the Seawall — filling the gap between the island's chain hotels and its historic grand properties. The rooftop bar is reputedly the largest beachfront rooftop bar in Galveston.
Hotel Lucine is a 61-room boutique hotel on Galveston's Seawall Boulevard, converted from the original 1963 Treasure Isle Motel. The low-slung, two-story building still wraps around a classic mid-century courtyard and heated pool, but Austin design studio Kartwheel nearly gutted the interior to restore the bones and layer in sandy woods, palm-print drapes, and original 1960s pink-tiled bathrooms. The result is equal parts beach house and design hotel — retro without being precious, and genuinely social in a way most Texas Gulf Coast properties are not.
