Why It Matters
One of Spain's most architecturally distinctive small hotels. The spa — La Cova d'Água — is cut directly into the ancient limestone walls of the city's first Roman fortifications. The courtyard pool is framed by Romanesque ramparts. A commission by Frederic Amat, one of Catalonia's foremost artists, anchors the entire property. And they brew their own craft beer, Rispa, on-site.
An 18th-century baroque palace — formerly known as Casa Heras de Puig — that opened as a hotel in 2022 after a meticulous restoration by architect Dani Isern. The courtyard, El Pati, is anchored by a nearly three-meter ceramic fountain sculpted by Catalan artist Frederic Amat, and the spa is literally carved into the limestone rock of Girona's Romanesque ramparts. Just 24 rooms, tons of art, and a philosophy they call La Vida Plena.
