Hotel Prinsenhof Groningen
Historic grandeur without the stuffiness. Century-old wooden beams and stained glass sit alongside polished modern interiors. The whole place is genuinely quiet — even though the Grote Markt is a 5-minute walk. It has the feel of staying in a private residence rather than a hotel.
Book valet parking in advance — it is limited and costs €35/night (available 7am–10pm for hotel guests)
Why It Matters
The only 5-star hotel in Groningen province. Restaurant Nassau has listings in the Michelin Guide (Netherlands 2025) and a Gault&Millau rating of 15/20. The building itself — a monastery church from 1436 that later housed the governors of Orange-Nassau — is a recognized monument. TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Best of the Best 2024.
Prinsenhof started life in 1436 as a monastery church for the Brethren of the Common Life, later became the residence of the Princes of Nassau, then a military hospital, then a radio station. In 2012, a thorough renovation turned it into a 5-star boutique hotel — the first in the entire province of Groningen to earn that classification, officially awarded in January 2025. Thirty-four rooms spread through a monumental 15th-century building on one of the city's most beautiful squares, steps from the Martini Tower. Everything in the hotel is serious quality: Serta box spring beds, Italian linen, Molton Brown toiletries, free minibar in every room, and two proper restaurants that get noticed by Michelin and Gault&Millau.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Homemade sweet treats served in the brasserie's former chancel, beside an imposing fireplace. Available Thursday through Sunday, 14:30–16:00. Open to hotel guests and walk-ins.
The hotel has VanMoof city bicycles available to explore Groningen. The city is famously flat and bike-friendly — the Groninger Museum, Noorderplantsoen park, and the old city center are all easily reachable on two wheels.
The walled Renaissance garden dating from 1626 is directly adjacent to the hotel. It includes a rose garden, herb garden, two tree-arch walkways, and a monumental sundial with a 1731 inscription. Accessible via the sundial gate at Turfsingel. It was the private garden of governors including Willem Frederik and Albertine Agnes of Nassau — their initials are still in the box hedge.
Four private event spaces including the Prinsenzaal and the Tuinkamer. Suitable for business meetings, private dinners, weddings, and celebrations.
The hotel hosts weddings in its historic spaces, with catering by both the Brasserie and Restaurant Nassau teams.
