Hotel Puntagrande
Maritime museum meets intimate adults-only retreat. Blue and white colour palette, lava stone, reclaimed wood, seafaring objects everywhere. Romantic, eco-conscious, wildly remote. The ocean is not a backdrop here — it is the entire point.
Book the Suite Deluxe for the retractable skylight and two private terraces — the 'Terrace of Love' faces the ocean and is perfect for sunset, the 'Terrace of the Friends' gives panoramic island views
Why It Matters
Guinness World Record holder for world's smallest hotel (5 rooms, 600 sqm footprint, 9m tall). Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) protected cultural heritage site by the Canary Islands government in 2019. Received the Llave Michelin (Michelin Key) award in 2025. Famous past guests include the Spanish Royal Family and artist-architect César Manrique.
The Guinness World Records-certified world's smallest hotel since 1984, Hotel Puntagrande occupies a 1830 building perched on a narrow tongue of lava rock jutting straight into the Atlantic Ocean in Las Puntas, El Hierro. The whole place — all five rooms of it — looks and feels like a nautical museum: rough volcanic stone walls hung with antique compasses, ship registration plates, and bronze maritime artefacts, while bedside tables are crafted from original porthole glass and driftwood frames every mirror. Since 2018 the Italian Nahmias family (Davide, Paula, and their three daughters) have run it with a personal warmth that matches the extraordinary setting. No TVs, no air conditioning, no distractions — just the Atlantic crashing below your window.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A dedicated space within the hotel where guests can enjoy rare cigars and premium drinks in a relaxed, convivial atmosphere.
Bicycles are available to rent near the hotel. El Hierro's varied terrain makes it popular for both road and mountain biking.
A short coastal walk south of the hotel leads to La Maceta, El Hierro's famous natural seawater pools formed in volcanic rock. Free to use and very close to the hotel — a near-daily activity for most guests.
The hotel itself functions as a small naval museum. Rough stone walls are lined with antique compasses, maps, bronze ship registration plates from around the world, and a 19th-century diving suit in the lounge. Declared a cultural interest site by the Canary Islands government.
Owners Davide and Paula Nahmias put together individual bespoke island itineraries for guests on request. They speak Italian, Spanish, and English and have deep knowledge of El Hierro's hiking trails, diving spots, and local food scene.
El Hierro is one of Europe's darkest islands, with almost zero light pollution. The Suite Deluxe terraces and its retractable skylight are purpose-built for stargazing. All rooms are positioned to allow open-sky views from bed.
At the Alma Marina restaurant, stories of the sea and island are projected via 3D mapping directly onto dining tables during service, turning dinner into a full sensory experience.
