Why It Matters

Guinness World Record holder for world's smallest hotel (5 rooms, 600 sqm footprint, 9m tall). Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) protected cultural heritage site by the Canary Islands government in 2019. Received the Llave Michelin (Michelin Key) award in 2025. Famous past guests include the Spanish Royal Family and artist-architect César Manrique.

The Guinness World Records-certified world's smallest hotel since 1984, Hotel Puntagrande occupies a 1830 building perched on a narrow tongue of lava rock jutting straight into the Atlantic Ocean in Las Puntas, El Hierro. The whole place — all five rooms of it — looks and feels like a nautical museum: rough volcanic stone walls hung with antique compasses, ship registration plates, and bronze maritime artefacts, while bedside tables are crafted from original porthole glass and driftwood frames every mirror. Since 2018 the Italian Nahmias family (Davide, Paula, and their three daughters) have run it with a personal warmth that matches the extraordinary setting. No TVs, no air conditioning, no distractions — just the Atlantic crashing below your window.

Standard Ocean View Double Room

From USD234 / night

Four individually decorated double rooms, each facing the Atlantic Ocean directly. The rooms are small — this is the world's smallest hotel, after all — but finished with care: rough-hewn lava stone walls, reclaimed local wood, and traditional seafaring objects throughout. Bedside tables are made from original porthole glass. Some rooms have a private balcony. No TVs, no air conditioning.

Suite Deluxe

From USD529 / night

The jewel of the hotel and arguably one of the most theatrical rooms in the Canary Islands. The suite occupies the top floor and stretches to 50 sqm of interior plus 100 sqm of private terraces — 150 sqm total. A four-poster bed sits beneath a large glass skylight that retracts to reveal the night sky, turning the bed into a private observatory. Two separate terraces: the 40 sqm 'Terrace of Love' looks directly out over the ocean and is built for sunsets and stargazing in total privacy; the 60 sqm 'Terrace of the Friends' gives a panoramic view across the island. The shower (built for two) is entirely in teak wood; the two sinks are carved from fossil wood. A Japanese toilet, sensory showers, tantra chair, and champagne in the minibar round out what is genuinely a dramatic romantic proposition.
