Ask for a room with a private balcony when booking — some Classic rooms have them and it makes a big difference

Why It Matters

One of Rome's few genuinely characterful boutique hotels outside the tourist center. Michelin-listed. Part of the Tablet Hotels collection. The Aventine Keyhole — that famous peephole view of St. Peter's dome — is a 2-minute walk from the front door.

Hotel San Anselmo is a 19th-century pastel-colored villa sitting on Rome's quiet Aventine Hill, converted into a boutique hotel in 1960. It's the Rome that tourists never see — a residential neighborhood of old monasteries, rose gardens, and winding lanes, yet the Colosseum is a 25-minute walk away. Antique furnishings and Baroque flair collide with genuinely eccentric touches: poetry scrawled on bedroom walls, Bisazza mosaic tiles in bathrooms, themed rooms named for things like 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Gold.' No two rooms are alike, and that's the whole point.

Where You'll Stay

5 room types available

Classic Room
Standard Double

Classic Room

The main double room category, furnished with antique pieces and 'valuable decorations' — the hotel's language for a seriously dressed-up space. Some units have a private balcony overlooking the street or gardens. Private marble bathroom with bathtub or shower. Good choice for a romantic city break without jumping to suite prices.

Deluxe Room
Deluxe Double

Deluxe Room

The step-up room category, described as 'metropolitan-chic' — antique furniture mixed with modern design objects, creating a more layered aesthetic than the Classic. The bathroom is the headline here: large, inlaid marble, designed to feel like a proper luxury space. Multiple reviewers specifically mention the Deluxe rooms as worth the upgrade.

The entry point here is better than the name suggests. Furnished in classic style, designed for one or two people. Smaller than the upper categories but the same DNA — themed, non-smoking, with the hotel's signature marble bathroom (shower only, no tub). Breakfast included.
