Hotel Sanders
Residential luxury boutique. Warm and moody, Danish hygge meets Colonial British elegance. Theater references woven throughout — the cocktail bar is even named after the red velvet curtain at the neighboring Royal Theatre. Bespoke furnishings made by local craftsmen. Nothing feels mass-produced.

Why It Matters
Owned and operated by a celebrated ballet dancer with a specific vision — make it feel more like a home than a hotel — and it shows. It holds a Michelin Key, is a Virtuoso Preferred property, partners with Soho House, and holds a Green Key certification. One of the few luxury hotels in Copenhagen that genuinely delivers on the residential feel it promises.
Hotel Sanders sits just behind the Nyhavn canal in an 1869 building on a quiet cobblestoned street, a short stroll from Amalienborg Palace and the old stage of the Royal Danish Theatre. It was opened in 2017 by Alexander Kølpin — former principal dancer with the Royal Danish Ballet — who commissioned London studio Lind + Almond to transform what was once the down-at-heel Opera Hotel. The result is 54 individually styled rooms that feel like a lovingly curated private home: warm moody lighting, mid-century Danish furniture, natural wood floors, open fireplaces scattered throughout, and Ortigia toiletries in polished-plaster bathrooms.
