Why It Matters
The only Michelin Key hotel in La Rioja. Genuine family passion project by owner Javier Ruiz, who bought a derelict 16th-century manor and spent six years restoring it with Riojan architect Ignacio Quemada and interior designer Isabel López Villalta & Asociados. A 16-room luxury boutique hotel occupying a restored 16th-century civil manor house in the medieval village of Briones, deep in La Rioja Alta wine country. Opened in 2022 after a six-year renovation that preserved original stone walls and a 13th-century defensive wall, which now wraps around the hotel's inner courtyard. The only property in La Rioja to hold a Michelin Key designation — and that's not a coincidence. The food here, at chef Juan Cuesta's Allegar restaurant, is the real deal.

Guided wine tastings in the hotel's original underground stone cellar, hosted by local Briones-area winemakers and winegrowers. An intimate format — small groups, winemakers pouring and explaining their own bottles, covering different styles and Rioja subzones. Sessions on selected dates and by prior request.
The hotel concierge arranges personalised visits to local wineries — the team proactively reaches out to guests before arrival with recommendations. Briones municipality alone has more than 9 wineries. Haro's famous Barrio de La Estación (a 10-minute drive) has the highest concentration of century-old bodegas in the world.
The hotel can arrange tee times at Rioja Alta Golf Club (25km away, near Santo Domingo de la Calzada), Golf Logroño (32km) or Club de Campo Sojuela (36km). Front desk handles reservations.
Each mid-June, the entire town of Briones dresses in period medieval costume for the Medieval Days festival. One of the most atmospheric local events in Rioja Alta — worth timing a visit around if possible.
Self-guided or arranged walks and cycles through the vineyards surrounding Briones. The hotel sits on a hilltop with the Ebro river below — the landscape itself is the activity.
UNESCO-recognised as the best wine culture museum in the world, the Vivanco Museum is 15 minutes' walk from the hotel (just over 1km). Includes ancient drinking vessels, agricultural tools, grape-centric artworks, and the Garden of Bacchus with over 220 grape varieties from around the world.
