Why It Matters
Canada's first purpose-built boutique hotel, now a Design Hotels member and Marriott Bonvoy property. The lobby's translucent alabaster fireplace is one of Montreal's most photographed interiors, and the Yubari restaurant has become a destination in its own right.
A 10-storey Beaux-Arts building built in 1901, Hotel St. Paul opened in 2001 as Canada's first boutique hotel. The 119-room property sits right on the edge of Vieux-Montréal, and the exterior stonework gives zero indication of what's inside—bold, fashion-forward interiors by Montreal firm Borrallo, with leather bedframes, custom furniture, original artworks, and an alabaster fireplace in the lobby that genuinely stops people in their tracks. The anchor dining concept is Yubari, an avant-garde Japanese restaurant with an omakase counter and sake bar run by Quebec-born Chef Annie Kwan.

The world-famous jazz festival takes place each summer (late June to early July) and the hotel's central location puts guests within walking distance of the main venues and outdoor stages.
The hotel publishes a curated local guide covering the spots the staff actually recommend—classic brasseries, repurposed Old Port factories, a bar club inside a former Royal Bank vault, and locally crafted jewellery shops among others.
The hotel's wellness page curates favourite running routes along the waterfront and through the green spaces of Old Montreal and the Old Port—a good way to see the neighbourhood at ground level. Linked through GreatRuns.com.
