HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO
Contemporary Japanese luxury. Calm, almost meditative. The design team — architect Akira Kuryu, interior designer André Fu, and landscape architect Shunsaku Miyagi — worked together to make each space feel anchored in Kyoto's seasonal rhythms. Natural materials dominate: stone bathtubs, sakura cherry wood, tatami details. Not flashy. Quietly exceptional.
Book the Onsen Suite if the budget allows — private open-air hot spring with garden views is the highlight of the property
Why It Matters
The first hotel in Kyoto to receive a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating in its opening year (2020). Awarded Three Michelin Keys in 2025 — the highest hotel distinction Michelin offers. Named in The World's 50 Best Hotels 2025. The on-site TOKI restaurant features in the 2025 Michelin Guide, with Chef Tetsuya Asano selected to represent Japan at the Bocuse d'Or 2027.
HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO sits directly across from Nijo Castle on the former Kyoto estate of the Mitsui family's executive branch — a site the family occupied for over 250 years. Guests enter through the Kajiimiya Gate, a 300-year-old structure that anchors everything in its historic context before they step into a contemporary luxury hotel designed by André Fu. The 160 rooms interpret sukiya (traditional Japanese tearoom) architecture in natural stone, wood, and bespoke textiles, with a 1,300m² stroll garden at the centre.
