Hotel Utano Kyoto Bessho
Serious heritage architecture meets understated luxury. Three distinct building styles share the grounds: a shoin-style main hall, a sukiya-style annex, and a Spanish-inspired Art Deco Western wing. The lobby features washi paper light installations by Kyoto designer Eriko Horiki and calligraphy by Kenichi Kuroda. Quiet, intimate, adults-focused.

Why It Matters
One of Kyoto's few genuinely historic overnight experiences — you're sleeping inside a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, not just near one. Only 10 rooms, each with a private onsen. The Japanese garden was supervised by Mirei Shigemori, one of Japan's most celebrated 20th-century landscape architects. The Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels have both recognised it since its opening.
A 10-room heritage villa that opened in November 2024 inside a 1939 Showa-era residence in Kyoto's forested northwest corner. The building was originally the private home of Kozo Owada, an executive at Kyoto Electric Power Company, and its main building, front gate, service gate, and middle gate have been recommended for Japan's Registered Tangible Cultural Property status. Every room has a private indoor hot spring bath fed by Kiyomizu Onsen's alkaline waters, and the 3,300-square-meter grounds contain a Japanese garden restored under the guidance of landscape architect Mirei Shigemori.
