Hotel Weihrerhof
Quiet, family-run alpine lake retreat. Nature-forward and genuinely sustainable — not as a marketing angle, but as a way of operating. The design is warm and grounded: local wood everywhere, handmade details, no pretense. Families, couples, and solo travelers all mix comfortably. Think less 'hotel experience,' more 'staying at a very well-run family home on a mountain lake.'
Book the Breakfast Island for your group — it's a separate little island in the lake accessible by a wooden bridge, and you can reserve it exclusively for breakfast surrounded by water
Why It Matters
One of the smallest 4-star hotels in South Tyrol, certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, and it sits on 100,000 m² of private grounds right on one of the cleanest swimming lakes in Italy. The signature boathouse sauna perched on the lakeshore is genuinely unique. In winter, the lake freezes and becomes a natural ice rink — guests can skate directly from the hotel grounds.
Hotel Weihrerhof is a 23-room, 4-star nature hotel run by the Pichler family, sitting right on the banks of Lake Costalovara (Wolfsgrubener See) on the Ritten plateau, about 1,200 meters above Bolzano. It's small by design — and that's the point. Every room has a balcony, nearly all face the lake, and the whole place is built from local materials: stone pine, larch, spruce, chestnut, porphyry. The hotel's philosophy is called 'Laxn' — a South Tyrolean concept of deliberate, unhurried rest — and it shows in everything from the GSTC-certified sustainability practices to the fact that Wi-Fi switches off at night.
